MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alta. confirmed Friday that one student participating in an innovation academy in Nice, France was unaccounted for.
Mykhaylo (Misha) Bazelevskyy, a fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student, has not been found since an attack in the city Thursday night.
The school said it has five students and one faculty member from the School of Business enrolled in the European Innovation Academy, an experimental summer training program, in Nice.
It said four of the students and the faculty member were confirmed to be safe, but Bazelevskyy remained missing.
“We are very concerned and are currently working through the Government of Canada to get further details of his status,” the university said in a news release.

Bazelevskyy first came to MacEwan University as an international student. He is a Ukraine national but has permanent resident status in Canada.
“He has a family, a brother and sister-in-law… here in Edmonton,” university president David Atkinson said.
He said Bazelevskyy’s parents “are distraught.”
“We are sitting here, waiting for more news. We remain eternally optimistic. Misha was an important person in university life.”

He was a member of the varsity golf team and a residence assistant.
Amy Beard, who is part of the MacEwan Students’ Association, knew Bazelevskyy.
“It’s very overwhelming,” she said. “We’re hoping for his safe return.
Beard described Bazelevskyy as “just the nicest guy that anyone could meet.”
She said he was very involved in the school community and played on a number of athletics teams.
“We continue to hope, we continue to pray that things will work out for the best,” Atkinson said.
The four students who are safe and accounted for are: Derek Anderson, Alanna Brokop, Ismail Khalil and Rebecca Smillie. The faculty member confirmed safe is Launa Linaker.
They were about halfway through their summer program, but Atkinson said the school is working on getting them home to Edmonton as soon as possible.
