David and Collet Stephan appeal convictions in meningitis death of son

A southern Alberta couple convicted of failing to provide the necessaries of life after their 18-month-old son died of bacterial meningitis, is appealing their conviction.

A lawyer for David and Collet Stephan said his clients intend to argue that the judge was “unfair” in his legal instructions to the jury.

TIMELINE: Ezekiel Stephan’s final days

A judge sentenced David to four months in jail and his wife, Collet, was given three months of strict house arrest. They were also put on probation for two years.

The Crown is also appealing the case; they argue the sentence the couple received was too lenient.
