Canadian troops have not crossed the border into Syria as part of the latest push against the so-called Islamic State, says Canada’s Department of National Defence.
DND spokesperson Daniel Le Bouthillier refuted a report by the Sputnik news agency, which alleged that an unknown number of German and Canadian troops had recently arrived in the northern Syrian town of Tell Abyad.
The report quotes unidentified sources who claimed that “the military service personnel were deployed to the area in the past few days as part of the U.S.-led international operation to defeat Daesh terrorist group.”

Le Bouthillier said the Canadian mission, which no longer includes any bombing operations in the region, continues to be limited to Iraq. No Canadian troops are deployed in Syria, he maintained.
