Chinese engineers unveiled a completed compartment of a futuristic-looking elevated bus in east China’s Jiangsu Province on Sunday, hoping their new design will help relieve traffic pressure in cities across the country.

Unlike regular buses, the Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) stretches over two lanes and has a large space underneath that allows cars to drive below it.

Each bus will have two to four compartments capable of carrying up to 300 passengers and measuring 10 metres long, 7.8 metres wide and 5 metres tall. The compartments are easy to add and detach.

Transit Elevated Bus Technology, the company that designed the bus, estimates its application could reduce congestion by more than 35 percent.

“We want to utilize the three-dimensional space in the most delicate, simple and cost-effective way. It will relieve traffic congestion,” said Song Youzhou, chief engineer of TEB Technology.

Song said the cost for one kilometre of rails for the electric-powered bus is about US $20 million, only 16 to 20 percent of the cost to build subway routes.

The elevated buses are expected to go to market next year.
