Finally – a break from the storms before the potential for severe weather returns for Canada Day long weekend!
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the city of Lloydminster as well as parts of southeastern Saskatchewan including the Estevan, Weyburn, Moosomin and Carlyle areas.
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon along a cold front sweeping through with the threat diminishing this evening.
Environment Canada says the main threats of the thunderstorms in the Lloydminster area are loonie-sized hail, 90 km/h wind gusts and rainfall in excess of 50 millimetres.
The main threats of the storms in southeastern Saskatchewan are large hail, damaging winds and torrential downpours.
Saskatoon Forecast
Today
The day began under a mix of sun and cloud with temperatures around 13 degrees before warming up into the mid-20s by noon.
There is a slight chance of a thunderstorm bubbling up early this afternoon, however high pressure is building in from the north that’ll help clear skies out late in the day.
We are expecting to climb to a daytime high of 26 degrees later today.
Tonight
Clear skies will stick around tonight and as high pressure moves in from the north, it’ll help cool temperatures down to around 10 degrees as an overnight low.
Thursday
The month of June will end on a sunny note with a surface high pressure system settling in overtop of the region for the day.
It won’t be the warmest of high pressure systems though, with an expected daytime high in the mid-20s in the afternoon.
Clouds will then return in the evening as our next disturbance moves through that’ll bring back unsettled weather for Canada Day.
Canada Day Friday
The disturbance that moves in for Canada Day will bring in some more cloud and likely a few showers that may end by midday with an expected high in the mid-20s once again.
At this point it looks like Canada Day fireworks in Saskatoon should be rain-free.
Saturday/Sunday
The remainder of the long weekend looks a bit more unsettled with cloudy skies and a good chance of showers and even the potential for a severe thunderstorm on Saturday with a lot of moisture and heat in the area and a low pressure system swinging through helping to act as a trigger.
Sunday also holds the risk of thunderstorms with the potential for a few more sunny breaks though during the day.
Both days we’re expecting daytime highs in the mid-to-high 20s, helping provide enough energy for a potentially very active long weekend of weather.
