Saskatchewan septic tank hatches being checked after toddler falls in

In incident involving a septic tank occurred while a Calgary family stopped on their road trip last week in Saskatchewan. Facebook

Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Central Services said it will be double checking all provincial septic tank hatches this week following an incident where a 21-month-old girl fell into one.

Denaie McCarthy told Global News her family was heading to Regina from Calgary last week and stopped at an information centre right before Maple Creek, Sask.

Her youngest child was standing on the lid of a septic tank when it caved in – dropping her down into the sewage system eight feet below.

Thankfully, her dad was able to rescue her.

Richard Murphy, the deputy minister of Central Services, issued a statement on Monday.

“We have not determined whether the lid was damaged, rusted, fatigued, tampered with or simply unsecured prior to this unfortunate incident,” Murray said.

A permanent lid was installed at the information centre over the weekend.
