The 2016 Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo will get underway in Halifax later this week, bringing together military, police and civilian performers and featuring everything from bands to acrobats, drill teams and much more.

This year’s show will include a special tribute to Fort McMurray, in light of last month’s devastating wildfire.

“We’re doing a scene, which we call We Raise You Up, and we have four soloists singing that song. And we are doing a tribute to the city of Fort McMurray,” said Heather Kitchen, interim managing director with the International Tattoo.

The wildfires in Fort McMurray destroyed approximately 2,400 homes and buildings; and led to one of the biggest evacuations in Canadian history.

“I used to live in Alberta, I lived there three times in Alberta. So, I’ve been to Fort Mac and it’s very, I mean it’s devastating to have watched what was going on. And a lot of Maritimers, particularly Nova Scotians, have family and friends [there]. So we thought it was appropriate to mark something,” Kitchen said.

The musical tribute will recognize the efforts by all Albertans and the display of solidarity in the face of adversity.

“We wanted to pay tribute to hundreds, thousands of people who are affected, having to leave Fort Mac. But also to the firefighters particularly, RCMP, Canadian Forces, and all people around the world who sent other firefighters,” says Kitchen.

The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo runs from June 30 – July 7 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
