WINNIPEG — Shock, joy, and disappointment, all being felt across the globe following UK’s decision to leave the European Union, including here in Winnipeg.
The historic vote was a victory for Britons wanting to leave the European Union. But, for those wanting to stay, it was a different story. There were more questions than answers as they begin to wonder what comes next.
Yasmin Kabani has been living in England since she was 18 and says she’s shocked and saddened as these life altering changes happen to her home as she watches from Winnipeg.
“I’m very shocked and a little bit upset because I thought we would remain. I felt that’s where UK was,” said Kabani.
Kabani said a separation from the European Union leaves her wondering about the future. She said when she returns to England later this summer it’s going to be a time of uncertainty, economic instability, and financially questionable.

Her sentiments were echoed by a fellow British citizen living in Winnipeg.
Jehan Moorthy said he voted last week by post as a citizen abroad and he really believed Britain would remain a part of the European Union.
“That was something I wasn’t expecting at all. I’m a political studies major, that’s my background. I was predicting that was going to be a vote to remain,” said Moorthy.
Both didn’t get the outcome they were hoping for, but both said they are proud British citizens and will stand by their home country and move forward.
