Alberta police watchdog investigating after Edmonton police Taser incident sends man to hospital

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a police arrest in Edmonton that sent a man to hospital Monday.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers were called to a weapons-related complaint at an apartment in the area of 90 Street and 105A Avenue just after 6:40 a.m.

Police said the suspect was holding a weapon and tossing things onto parked cars below. Police also said they were told the man jumped off a third-storey balcony before officers arrived at the scene.

When police got there, they said the man was running down an alley and one of the officers used a stun gun on the suspect, after which he was arrested.

The man was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries police said he sustained during the incident.

Police did not say whether the man was facing any charges.

ASIRT is called in to investigate any incident involving Alberta law enforcement officers in which someone is seriously injured or killed.
