It’s been a long seven weeks for residents of Fort McMurray, who were forced from their homes by the wildfire dubbed “The Beast.”
One Lethbridge woman is hoping to send them some comfort.
Wilma Mulder, and hundreds of other members of the Facebook group Quilts for Fort McMurray, have put together more than 2,500 quilts to send to the community.
Wednesday, a member from Montana, U.S. arrived in Lethbridge with a U-Haul filled with quilts from across the United States.
Mulder said when the fire started she knew she needed to send warmth to those affected.
“In the condition that they were in, they had to leave their houses all of a sudden and they didn’t know what the future would bring,” Mulder said. “They need a little comfort. As a quilter myself, I know that quilts bring comfort.”
Mulder and other volunteers will be distributing the quilts at evacuation centres in Calgary on Thursday and centres in Edmonton on Friday.
