MONTREAL – Police are investigating what role a dog may have played in the death of a woman in her 50s in Pointe-aux-Trembles Wednesday.
Paramedics responded to a report of a woman unconscious in her backyard on Edgar Prairie Street.
When they arrived on the scene, they found the victim was badly mauled by a large dog and later pronounced her dead.
The dog, which police said appeared to be a pit bull, was put down by paramedics who said it was still acting aggressively at that time.
Police said they believe the dog belongs to the woman’s neighbour and are now trying to locate the person for further investigation.
“The investigator is still confirming if there’s a human element that may have caused this,” Montreal police spokesperson Abdullah Emran said.
“It does not appear to be the matter,” he added, though he said crime scene technician had not yet arrived at the scene.
If police determine that the dog is responsible for the woman’s death, the owner could face charges of negligence causing death.
