Hillary Clinton declared herself to be the winner of the Democratic primary Tuesday night after collecting primary wins in New Jersey, New Mexico and North Dakota.
“For the first time ever a woman will become the nominee of a major political party,” she declared before supporters in Brooklyn, New York, before congratulating Bernie Sanders on running a fine campaign.
“As your president, I will always have your back,” she said. “I want to congratulate Senator Sanders on the extraordinary campaign he has run.”
Clinton also took an opportunity to take a shot at her Republican rival, Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander-in-chief,” she declared before reminding voters of Trump’s attacks on a federal judge, reporters and women.
“He wants to win by stoking fear and rubbing salt in wounds and reminding us daily just how great he is,” Clinton said. “Well, we believe we should lift each other up, not tear each other down.”
On Tuesday, there were six primaries to be decided in the Democratic race.
Sanders finished in front of Clinton in North Dakota but was beaten in New Jersey, New Mexico and North Dakota. The verdict is still out on California and Montana.
Prior to Tuesday’s primaries, Clinton secured the 2,383 delegates she needed for the nomination prior to Tuesday’s voting, according to an Associated Press tally. Her total is comprised of pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses, as well as superdelegates – the party officials and officeholders who can back a candidate of their choosing

To no one’s surprise, Trump was well on his way to a clean sweep Tuesday with wins in New Jersey and New Mexico.
He addressed supporters at at Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York.
The presumptive Republican nominee pointed to his lead in some polls versus Clinton and said he expects to extend the lead.
“With all of her many problems and the tremendous mistakes she has made, and she has made mistakes, we expect our lead to continue to grow and to grow substantially,” Trump said.

He also issued a plea to Bernie Sanders’ supporters to join his cause.
“To all those Bernie Sanders supporters who have been left out in the cold by a rigged system, we welcome you with open arms,” Trump said.
Trump promised he will give a speech Monday, detailing “all of the things that have gone on with the Clintons.”
