MONTREAL – The search for a missing 23-year-old man who jumped off a dock in a no-swimming area ended tragically Saturday morning as police divers recovered his body from the St. Lawrence River in Verdun.
He was found at 8 a.m. near where he was reported missing Friday.
Police were first called to the dock behind Verdun’s Natatorium on Lasalle Boulevard at 7:35 p.m. Friday evening.
The young man was with a group of friends when two of them decided to jump off the dock into the river.
The victim never resurfaced, while the other man was able to make it back to the dock.
Police say there are no swimming signs posted along the shores of the river.
The coroner’s office will be performing an autopsy to shed some light on the circumstances leading to 23-year-old’s death.
Less than a week ago, police divers recovered the body of a 34-year-old man from the nearby Lachine Canal after he apparently jumped in for a swim.
