VERNON – Could you live in a home under 300 square feet? A local society is betting the concept will attract interest.
The First Nations Friendship Centre in Vernon is planning to build a tiny house as a fundraiser this summer, one they hope it is the first of many.
The centre is ultimately planning to create and manage a community of twenty tiny homes for low-income, at-risk youth who face barriers to finding housing.
The tiny house built this summer will be raffled off to raise money. That money will help the centre pursue their long term goal of building the community of tiny homes for at-risk youth.
The centre is getting help from professionals volunteering their time to build the initial home, which will be 280 square feet and include a loft bed and a roof top patio.
The centre hopes that raising the roof on one tiny home will not only raise money but also interest in their bigger goal.
“We dream big or go home,” said Maggie King, a director with the First Nations Friendship Centre. “This time let’s dream big and make some homes.”
The First Nations Friendship Centre doesn’t know yet where in the Vernon area the community of tiny houses could be built.
