It’s an abnormally early start to the cherry season in the Okanagan, with the fruit nearly ready for harvest on many orchards.
Even though the crop isn’t quite ripe, it was ripe enough for tasting on a Kelowna orchard Sunday morning, at least according to one cherry-craving coyote.
Natalie Butler has owned the orchard for the past 20 years and while she’s seen coyotes on her property before, she said she’s never seen anything like this.
“He just started jumping higher and circling the tree and chewing the cherries, it looks likes pits and all,” Butler said. “It just looked like he was having his morning snack.
“I was surprised he could jump that high.”
Butler said while she doesn’t know if he’ll take the invite, the coyote is welcome to come back.
“Obviously he’s hungry and there’s lots of cherries.”
