Hundreds of chickens were killed after a semi-truck carrying poultry crashed Friday morning just east of Edmonton.

The semi’s load spilled onto Anthony Henday Drive’s northbound lanes at the Sherwood Park Freeway and Wye Road overpass as it attempted to exit on the ramp.

It’s believed the truck drove over mud which caused it to get pulled into a ditch and flip onto its side.

There were about 7,000 chickens on board the semi.

Traffic on the Henday northbound was reduced to one lane for several hours.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m.
