Wind, rain and snow put damper on long weekend plans in Calgary

Wet cold weather causes a number of closures over the long weekend, including at Calaway Park Sunday and Monday. Pat Carol, Global News

CALGARY – It made for miserable camping, hopeless gardening and forced the cancellation of all kinds of events.

Wet, cold weather caused problems all across Calgary, which, according to Environment Canada, saw a total of 21.8 mm of rain between 11 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Monday.

Glencoe Golf and Country Club and Valley Ridge Golf Club were among those forced to close their greens on Sunday due to snow.

The cool weather and rain continued Monday, but, at least at Valley Ridge, some brave golfers took advantage of having the course almost to themselves.

“I don’t get to play too often because I’m working a lot,” Grayson Sharples said. He admits, however, the weather doesn’t help his golf game. “I think that [last] hole was just me playing poorly, but yeah… the wind definitely plays a factor.”

“You take in huge divots, were you don’t really mean to,” golfer Jake Ericson said.

Rollercoaster weather also caused Calaway Park to close down their amusement park both Sunday and Monday.
