KELOWNA — A man believed to be in a stolen vehicle was arrested in Kelowna Sunday afternoon but it turns out he was the registered owner of the vehicle he was driving.
The incident stopped traffic in downtown Kelowna.
It happened just before 3p.m. on Bernard Avenue near Water Street.
Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey with Kelowna RCMP said officers stopped a grey GMC Jimmy, that was believed to have been stolen from the parking lot of a hotel in the area of Abbott Street and Highway 97.
“A member of the public reported what appeared to be the theft of a motor vehicle in progress to police officers in the downtown core who themselves observed the vehicle being driven out of the parking lot and in the downtown area in an erratic manner,” said O’Donaghey.
One man was taken into custody after police conducted a high-risk traffic stop with the suspected stolen vehicle along Bernard Avenue near Water Street, according to O’Donaghey.
“The investigation revealed that the man was in fact the vehicle’s registered owner, that he had used an antenna to gain entry to his vehicle after locking his keys inside his SUV,” said O’Donaghey.
The man was released from custody without charge.
