MONTREAL – Former Montreal and Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN-NDG) borough mayor Michael Applebaum was in court Monday to argue that there’s been an unreasonable delay in his trial.

Applebaum faces charges of fraud, conspiracy and breach of trust related to several alleged questionable real estate projects in the CDN-NDG borough between 2006 and 2011, before he became mayor of Montreal.

He was arrested by Quebec’s anti-corruption unit UPAC at his home on June 17, 2013 and initially faced 14 charges including fraud, conspiracy, breach of trust, and corruption in municipal affairs.

Applebaum resigned as mayor of Montreal the next day, but maintained the allegations against him were unfounded.
