RCMP in Chetwynd are investigating after a number of beloved chainsaw carvings in town were defaced last night.

Two carvings were completely destroyed, while an additional six were vandalized – including one carving of mating turtles, in which the turtle on top was decapitated.

The carvings, located around town, were from past years of the Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship – a highlight of the summer in the Peace Region, where top chainsaw artists compete to create the best wooden sculptures.

This year’s competition takes place from June 9 to 12.

RCMP say they will be releasing more information about the crime tomorrow morning.
