Accused Winnipeg letter bomber denied bail

WINNIPEG — Guido Amsel will remain behind bars while awaiting trial.

A gaunt-looking Amsel showed no emotion during the decision, but his wife left the courtroom in tears.

Amsel is accused of sending three letter bombs and severely injuring his ex-wife’s lawyer.

In July 2015, Winnipeg police charged Amsel with three counts of attempted murder and multiple weapons and explosive charges after allegedly sending letter bombs to two lawyers office’s and his ex-wife’s work place.

He was originally denied bail last fall but his lawyer asked for a bail review decision.

It was dismissed Thursday.

His trial is expected to start in August 2017.

Amsel is also accused of another bombing that happened in 2013.

The charges stem from a bombing at his ex-wife’s home in the rural municipality of St. Clements.
