SASKATOON – A psychiatric assessment has been ordered for a man accused of fatally stabbing an 18-year-old who was said to be a good friend of his. Walid Adam Mohamed made a brief court appearance Tuesday via video.
He will now be admitted to the forensic unit of the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford for 30 days to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
On April 24, Walid was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mohammed Omar of Winnipeg.

Saskatoon police believe an altercation took place early that morning outside a business in the 700-block of Central Avenue and then continued inside. Omar was declared dead at the scene.
It was Saskatoon’s fifth homicide in 2016.
Mohamed’s family were present in court today. His next court appearance has been set for June 10.
