SASKATOON – Don’t call it a quarterback controversy, the Saskatchewan Huskies have made their decision. If the season were to start tomorrow, Kyle Siemens would be the teams’ starting quarterback.
“Kyle’s been our guy for the last little bit and will continue to be for the start of this camp,” said Huskies head coach Brian Towriss.

If that trend continues, Drew Burko, Saskatchewan’s opening day starter for the past four seasons will serve as Siemens’ backup.
“It’s a little different situation than I’m used to,” said Burko, “but I’m just trying to come out there and play the best that I can no matter what role I’m in.”
Believe it or not, there’s no ill will between the two quarterbacks. Siemens and Burko are actually friends off the field.
“I went to high school with him, he’s a year younger than me so I’ve known him for a long time,” said Burko. “We’re friends, we joke around, we hang out sometimes, it’s a good relationship.”
As of right now, Siemens is Saskatchewan’s projected starter for the 2016 season. He earned that distinction with his strong play in the second half of the 2015 campaign. But nothing is set in stone, especially when you consider Saskatchewan’s projected backup has racked up 7,579 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns throughout his CIS career.
As far as Siemens is concerned, a little bit of competition is a good thing.
The Huskies will wrap up spring camp with their annual Green and White scrimmage on Sunday morning. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 a.m. CT.
