Speed a possible factor in fatal crash on Hwy 344

MONTREAL – One man is dead and another in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash in Saint-André-d’Argenteuil, located south of Lachute on the Ottawa River.

Police said the incident happened at 4 a.m. Sunday as the car was heading east on Highway 344, near Lapierre Street.

The vehicle slammed into a tree, after the driver lost control of the car while negotiating a curve.

The 34-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Highway 344 remained closed as of 1:30 p.m. Sunday as investigators with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) examined the scene.

A detour is in place via Montée Robert.

SQ spokesperson Sgt. Daniel Thibodeau said speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
