Impaired driving charges laid after fatal motorcycle crash near Sundre, Alta.

A 47-year-old motorcyclist from Sundre is dead after a car hit him head-on late Friday night.

RCMP said preliminary investigation found an eastbound car crossed over the centre line of Highway 27 about 15 kilometres east of Sundre and hit the westbound motorcyclist.

Mounties, EMS and fire crews responded to the crash at 11:40 p.m.

The motorcyclist was taken by STARS Air Ambulance to a Calgary hospital where he later died. His name is not being released until his family is notified.

The driver of the car was arrested at the scene, RCMP said.

Sean Terrance Letwin, 30, from Beaverdell, B.C., has been charged with:

  • Impaired driving causing death;
  • Operating a motor vehicle causing death with a blood-alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit;
  • Operating a motor vehicle while unauthorized.

Letwin was released on cash bail with several conditions including abstaining from alcohol and not being in the driver’s seat of any motor vehicle.

He is set to appear in Didsbury Provincial Court on May 16.
