REGINA – A “secure the building” mode has been lifted at three Regina schools after police got a call about a report of a handgun in the Glencarin area.
A secure the building is a situation where police believe a threat is currently outside the building. The schools then lock all the outside doors and the exterior doors are monitored. Monitored entry is allowed through the front doors.
According to Regina police, a staff member at an elementary school on the 2800 block of Dewdney Avenue witnessed a boy breaking a car window on Monday afternoon, at around 2:50 p.m.
Police said the staff member, who recognized the suspect as a student who went to another school in the area, also reportedly noticed the suspect was running away with what looked like a handgun and called 911.
Officers responded to F.W. Johnson Collegiate to search the neighbourhood in an attempt to find the suspect.
The high school, nearby Judge Bryant School and another elementary school all went into a “secure the building” mode that has since been lifted.
Police said officers located the suspect but did not find a handgun on him.
They said charges are pending in connection with damage to the vehicle.
Police said the incident is unrelated to an earlier bomb threat at Winston Knoll Collegiate.
