The father and son, who are from the U.S., were found unconscious around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Marriott Residence Inn at 2170 Lincoln Ave.

According to officials, the two had not regained consciousness when they were taken to hospital; the man was pronounced dead.

According to the Quebec Lifesaving Society, smaller pools do not require an on-duty lifeguard.

“Except, you need [someone] with [an] aquatic emergency certificate near the deck to react if there’s a problem with the swimming pool,” said Raynald Hawkins, the society’s executive director.
