Streets in downtown Calgary reopen after glass falls from 33 floor of construction site

CALGARY – Several streets in downtown Calgary which were shut down due to falling glass were reopened on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to the Brookfield Place construction site on the corner of 6 Avenue and 1 Street S.W. at around 4 p.m. on Monday after glass from a window on the 33 floor fell to the street below.

Police told Global News the glass was broken by a crane which swayed and hit the tower.

Some of the glass landed on a vehicle driving by, but according to the City of Calgary no one was injured.

Winds in the downtown core were too high for crews to safely scale the building and secure the glass.

As such, police closed 6 Avenue between Centre Street and 2 Street S.W. and 1 Street S.W. between 8 Avenue and 5 Avenue S.W. as a precaution. The closure severely impacted rush hour traffic in the area.

By 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, winds had died down enough that crews were able to access the window to remove the broken glass.

“The area is safe at this time and we have reopened all the roads,” Acting Battalion Chief Paul LeBlanc said.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

“Part of that investigation is how do you prevent that from happening in the future,” Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department said. “Then changes are made accordingly.”
