Thieves smashed their way into the to Superior Propane Ice Centre Tuesday night, making off with an ATM.
It’s the third such smash and grab theft of an ATM in Greater Moncton in the last two weeks.
“It’s a little alarming that there might be lots more of that going on in the city and the surrounding areas,” said Louis Gaudet, communications officer for the rink.
Gaudet says he got the call from RCMP just before 4am Wednesday morning, letting him know thieves had smashed a side office window a few hours earlier, broke into the facility and stole part of the ATM machine.

According to Sgt. Jamie Melanson with Codiac RCMP, this is the third ATM machine to be stolen in the city in the last few weeks.

“The first one took place at the Aquatic Centre in Dieppe and that took place on March 29th. The second one took place on April 8th at the Dooley’s and the third one was this morning.”
Sgt. Melanson would not say whether RCMP believe the crimes are connected, but he did say this type of crime in Greater Moncton is highly unusual.
“Investigators are definitely looking at any lead they could but we encourage the public to come forward with any crime stoppers tips,” said Melanson.
According to those impacted by the crimes, the thefts did happened in much the same way. More than one thief, in at least one case wearing masks, smashed a glass door or window and made off with the machine in a vehicle.
RCMP are continuing their investigation.
