4th man charged in connection with murder of Edmonton man

RCMP have arrested and charged the fourth and final suspect in the death of an Edmonton man whose remains were found in a burned-out car near Fort Saskatchewan in January.

Max Matthews was arrested on Saturday. The 37-year-old Edmonton man has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in Junior Morris Laidley’s death.

Matthews was also charged with one count of indignity to human remains.

On Jan. 10, Mounties were called to a rural area in Lamont County near Township Road 572 between Range Roads 201 and 202 for reports of a burned-out vehicle.

An investigation led to the discovery of human remains that were later confirmed to be those of 38-year-old Laidley.

Laidley was last seen in Fort Saskatchewan on Jan. 4 and was later reported as missing on Jan. 13.

Three Edmonton men were charged last week with first-degree murder in connection with Laidley’s death: 31-year-old Matthew Thiemer, 39-year-old Melvin Pennell and 39-year-old Christopher Chung.

Pennell and Chung also face additional charges of indignity to human remains. All three men have made their first court appearances.

Matthews was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
