OSOYOOS, B.C. – Hundreds of parents, students and community members who came out Wednesday night hoping the only high school in town would stay open left disappointed and frustrated.

The Board of Education for School District 53 voted in favour of closing Osoyoos Secondary School.

Parents say a recent survey shows 40 percent support among local families for an independent school because of the boards decision.

Save our Schools Chairperson Brenda Dorosz told board members dozens of families will remove students from the public school system because of the move.

A unidentified parent told Global News after the meeting families were planning on closing down local highways to protest the closure, but no time or date was given for the action.

Highway 3 and Highway 97 intersect in Osoyoos on the Canada/U.S. border.

Grade 8-12 students from Osoyoos will be bused to Oliver’s South Okanagan Secondary School.

Osoyoos Secondary is one of four facilities recently closed by school boards in the south Okanagan, including two in Penticton and one in Summerland.
