CALGARY – Sleep-deprived Calgarians who need a little more shuteye will now be able to nab a nap aboard several city buses.
On Friday, Calgary Transit introduced its new TransitNap program, which gives weary travellers the option of dozing aboard small beds installed at the front of select buses.
The beds, created from old luggage racks, can be booked ahead of time through the Calgary Transit app. Bed rentals cost users an extra $20 per ride.
Calgary Transit communications coordinator Ron Collins said the idea for the new sleeper-style buses came in response to the current economic slump, which has impacted their bottom line.
“Calgary Transit is always looking for ways to generate new revenue,” Collins said. “Whether it’s just getting that extra hour of sleep in the morning – or unwinding after a long, hard day’s work – now there’s more you can do at Calgary Transit.”
It’s expected the TransitNap beds will generate an extra $500,000 in revenue this year alone.
Calgary Transit warns the beds, which have been installed directly behind bus drivers, are equipped with cameras to ensure user safety.
