SASKATOON – Two people were injured and a unit at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre was damaged after a disturbance by inmates. Drew Wilby of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Corrections and Policing says it started around 7:30 a.m. CT in a high-security unit and ended this afternoon.
Wilby says 24 inmates refused to go into lockup and then caused significant damage to the unit, including setting a few small fires and breaking windows.

He says two people received minor injuries.
The inmates are a mix of people who are serving sentences and those who are awaiting trials.
Wilby says an investigation is underway by both the ministry and police, and charges could be laid.
“My preliminary information suggests there was some significant damage caused to that unit,” Wilby said in an interview Tuesday.
Wilby said it’s not known what caused the inmates to refuse to go into lockup or why they rioted.
