WINNIPEG — Beaver Bus Lines is about to put on the brakes to its transit service between Winnipeg and Selkirk.
Starting July 1, the company says it’s discontinuing its service between the two cities.
“Due to decreased ridership and rising expenses we can no long continue to operate it,” said John Panting, the operations manager for Beaver Bus Lines.

Fuel, building costs and salaries are many of the costs the company faces, and the route does not make enough money to sustain business, he said.
“Buses run on a fixed schedule and it becomes inconvenient for those wanting convenience,” he said. “More people are driving or car pooling.”
Beaver Bus Lines had already stopped its Selkirk/Winnipeg service on the weekend, and reduced hours during the week to cut costs. But that wasn’t enough to save the route.
“The writing was on the wall that we were going to have to cancel the service. It was bleeding too much,” Panting said.
