WINNIPEG — They are a quick snack or an easy supper for Canadians and have been for decades, but did you know Pizza Pops were created and continue to be made in Winnipeg?

“Pizza Pops were originally invented in the mid sixties by a local man who started selling them in his restaurant but also was selling them at Grand Beach and they became very popular,” said Greg Guinan, the plant manager for General Mills in Winnipeg.

Before the product hits the shelves it goes through a quality control process.

“Different panelists come in, usually in a panel of three, and we taste every production before we release it to the stores,” said Guinan.

In 1987, Pillsbury Canada bought that business and then in 2001 General Mills bought Pillsbury.

Pizza Pops are only in Winnipeg at a plant in Fort Garry. The food is only sold in Canada.

“There is an NBA player in the United States who tweets he cant wait to get Pizza Pops so I imagine that some of them make it across the border some how but that’s not for us to talk about,” said Guinan.
