A close call with a man on a wooded trail in Texas has motivated a woman to design a bra that conceals a small knife or pepper spray so women can protect themselves.

Jennifer Cutrona, 35, designed the Booby Trap Bras after she was nearly attacked while training for a marathon last year.

“A guy jumped out of the bushes at me and went to grab my arm,” Cutrona told the Daily News. “He didn’t get me and I kept running and got away from him.”

Following the incident, the mother of two began to design a prototype sports bra with a small pocket on the front that can hold a custom-sized blade which a woman could use in self-defence.

According to the Booby Trap Bras website, the sportswear is described as “a bra that gives you that simple choice of protection; knife or spray.”

“Whether you are running miles away from home on a beautiful trail, cycling around the lake or just hiking downtown, you should always feel confident, you should always feel safe,” reads a message on the website.

The bras sell for $55US and the custom-sized knife is $13.

“It had to happen for me to move forward,” Cutrona explained to CBS News. “I was excited that I got away, but I know a lot of women aren’t that lucky.”

Cutrona also designed a compression sleeve that can be worn by both men and women. The sleeve has two pockets built in, one to hold a mobile phone and the other for a knife.
