WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame announced their class of 2016 on Thursday and it includes two athletes and one team.

Hart Trophy winner Herb Gardiner leads the list of inductees. Gardiner played with the Winnipeg Victorias as an amateur and even returned to the team after serving in World War I. He broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens at the age of 35 and won the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP in 1927. He was also a player/coach with the Chicago Blackhawks and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958. Gardiner died in 1972.

Winnipeg’s Gary Aldcorn will also be enshrined. Aldcorn moved to Winnipeg when he 12 and was part of two Manitoba All-Star lacrosse teams that competed at the Minto Cup in 1954 and 1955.

After playing with the Winnipeg Monarchs, Aldcorn won a Memorial Cup with the Toronto Marlboros in 1955. He also won a championship with the WHL’s Winnipeg Warriors in 1956. Aldcorn would play 226 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins from 1956-1961. In 1997 he was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

The 1962 ANAF Winnipeg Scottish will be inducted in the team category. The soccer team won the Carling Trophy for the Canadian Senior Club Championship in 1962. They were the seventh Manitoba team to win the national soccer crown. The 1954 ANAF team was already inducted in 1999.

The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame will hold their annual induction banquet on April 23 at the Club Regent Event Centre.
