Parents of newborns in an Edmonton hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit can now stay with their babies overnight, thanks to a newly established Family Care Unit.
The Stollery Children’s Hospital has transferred nine of its NICU beds into the new unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, for newborns who are close to discharge from hospital and require less intensive care.
The unit has larger rooms equipped with breastfeeding chairs and an adult-sized bed for parental sleepovers.
More than 1,100 babies are admitted to the Stollery’s neonatal intensive care unit each year.
