REGINA – A Regina Police Service (RPS) officer whose assault conviction was recently upheld by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal will be keeping his job on the force.

Robert Power was charged with assault after he kicked Edward Stonechild in May of 2012 outside a Regina detox centre, then was found to have lied about it in his official reports after surveillance video surfaced. Power was subsequently fired from the Regina Police Service.

Power was found guilty in February of 2014, but a Queen’s Bench judge reviewed the case and overturned the conviction in November of 2014. He was reinstated to the RPS in December of 2014 after serving a conditional discharge.

The Crown appealed the acquittal, and in a decision released Tuesday it was ruled that the initial conviction should be upheld.

On Wednesday, the RPS confirmed that Power will remain on the force as a patrol officer.
