“What most people didn’t see is that meth messed my son up two years ago and although he wasn’t on it long, it affected something in his brain and this happens to people each and every day.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police have not released any details about the victim, who Brideau mentioned in her message.

“[The victim] was just like family and I really don’t know what happened to cause him to snap like this.

“All I do know is that he is my son and I love him more than anything and I will stand by his side always. Don’t be so quick to judge people as it could be closer to your life than you may realize. Your child or your friend or family member have been effected [sic]. Understand there are a lot of mental issues that people foresee each and every day that go unnoticed,” Brideau wrote.

“To everyone who has reached out to me in this nightmare, I can’t wake up from, thank you from the bottom of my family’s heart. We are strong and we will get through this somehow. It may take time to answer as it is taking every ounce of me just to hold it together.

“[The victim] was an amazing bright girl who lost her life way to [sic] soon. I love you girl. I’m so sorry, sorry. My heart breaks for all involved.”

On Monday, a group of family members gathered outside the apartment building, left flowers, and tried to comfort one another.

The mayor said the last few days have been very difficult on everyone in Edson.

“So many unanswered questions,” Mayor Greg Pasychny said. “Of course the RCMP can’t divulge exactly what happened and you don’t find out until later on but the question is always ‘why?'”

“It has a ripple effect through our community,” he said. “It affects our schools, it affects our adults, it affects everyone in the community. At the end of the day, it’s a horrific event on a minor and that just makes it even worse.”

Perron is scheduled to appear in an Edson court March 15.
