WEST KELOWNA — With good air quality and venting conditions, there will be some controlled burning happening in West Kelowna on Sunday.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) is advising of a controlled burn underway in the southern portion of Glen Canyon Regional Park.
Open burning is also allowed on Sunday for eligible central Okanagan property owners with permits from their local authority.
“[Sunday’s] burning is disposing of fire hazard debris collected as part of a large fuel modification project on just over 1,500 hectares between the trail entrances at Hebert and Brown Roads and Westbank Centre Park, south to the Gellatly Road parking area,” says Bruce Smith with the RDCO.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue and other authorities authorized the burning with appropriate permits for fire fuel hazard reduction, according to Smith.
Smith says more controlled burns will be required to dispose of fire hazard debris collected in fuel modification projects in Tepanier Creek Greenway Regional Park south of the Okanagan Connector (Highway 97C) near Peachland and on a 10-hectare section of Rose Valley Regional Park off Pettman and Bowes Roads in West Kelowna.
As a result, trails through these various work areas may be temporarily closed.
“Park users are asked to watch for signs advising that trails are closed and that they stay out of any closed areas of the park,” says Smith.
