“It’s mostly to be able to collect information, provide information to the public and to react in a timely manner to different malfunctions and changes in the traffic,” Michael Cantor, city engineer said.

The daily email you need for 's top news stories.

The goal is to help traffic flow more smoothly, and to provide updates to drivers using social media and a smartphone app.

“Drivers will know what is happening on the streets, they’ll make better decisions on their commutes,” Cantor said.

Currently if a traffic light is out, it’s up to the residents to pick up their phones and dial 311. With this new system, one of the biggest benefits for Winnipeg drivers will be that if something goes wrong, the city will know right away.

The centre is set to be fully operational by the end of 2016.
