RCMP charge Winnipeg man who allegedly fled Alberta police in stolen car

A 31-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with various driving-related offences after he allegedly fled police in a stolen vehicle Monday.

RCMP stopped the suspect vehicle at about 9 p.m. MT on Highway 1 near Canmore, Alta. Police said the vehicle had been reported stolen from Strathmore, Alta.

The driver first stopped, but then sped away from police westbound on the highway.

The vehicle was intercepted and the suspect was taken into custody. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Christopher Johnson has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police and driving while disqualified as well as a provincial driving offence.

Johnson was remanded in custody and appeared in Canmore Provincial Court Wednesday morning, police said.
