EDMONTON – Police are searching for witnesses after a two-vehicle collision led to shots being fired in a west Edmonton neighbourhood Sunday morning.
Officers were called to the area of 159 Street and 103 Avenue at around 8:30 a.m.
Police said a black Honda Civic and a black Chrysler 300 were involved in a collision. Shortly after, the people in the vehicles exchanged gunfire.
“It’s unclear if that collision was intentional or accidental or a matter of road rage,” Insp. Regan James with the Edmonton Police Service said.
When police arrived on scene both vehicles were abandoned.
Officers said it appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community. Police checked local hospitals and said it doesn’t appear as though anyone was injured.
“Certainly a frightening morning for the west-end people here,” James added.
Scott Dunphy, who lives in the area, said the sound of gunshots woke him up shortly after 8:30 a.m.
“I came right out of bed and went like, ‘Woah! That was serious.'” Dunphy said.
Dunphy watched part of the incident take place and spoke to his neighbours about they saw.
“The shooting started down at the far end of the street, from what we understand, because one of the neighbour’s houses got hit,” Dunphy said, adding another house and a vehicle appeared to have been hit by bullets.
“Very exciting Sunday morning in a very quiet neighbourhood.”
Another man who lives about half a block away from the scene said he was on his deck at around 8:38 Sunday morning when he heard the commotion.
“I heard a woman scream and following the scream there was a loud blast. Following the loud blast there were two small, what sounded like small calibre handgun shots that went off and that was the end of it. I didn’t hear anything more following that.”
At least one block was cordoned off with police tape late Sunday morning as officers continued to investigate.
