Expert tips on what to do if you lose or find a pet

If you find a pet, chances are it belongs to someone. Just because it doesn’t have a collar, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an owner.

Philip Fulton is the Community Outreach Manager at the Calgary Humane Society.  He explained the first thing you should do if you ever find an animal.

“Please bring it into a 24 hour vet clinic or the Calgary Humane Society or Animal services,” Fulton said.

If Animals Services or the Calgary Humane Society is closed, a 24 hour vet clinic is the best option.

If you are interested in adopting an animal after finding it, the Calgary Humane Society will call you if no one claims the animal.

“We keep animals for ten days minimum, before we put them up for adoption. Then the adoption process takes over.”

Fulton also recommends a microchip, which is placed under the animal’s skin to help identify it.
