Convicted animal abuser Nicolino Camardi was sentenced to 34 days in prison Monday after he pleaded guilty to breaching his probation.

The court heard Camardi, who has a lifetime ban on having any pets, took in his neighbour’s cat and dog last month.

Officers from the Calgary Police High Risk Offender Program (HROP) discovered the animals after they went to Camardi’s northeast home for a routine check on Jan. 27, 2016. While there they head a dog barking.

Camardi was on probation after being convicted of two counts of willfully causing pain and suffering to an animal.

He killed a dog and a cat.

Court heard Camardi had agreed to take in his neighbour’s pets so they could spray their home for bed bugs.

Police also found beer in the fridge and a bong on a table.

Camardi is not allowed to possess drugs or alcohol.

The 34-day sentence for two breaches of probation includes credit for time served.

Camardi appeared via closed circuit television from the Calgary Remand Centre.

The animals found in his home were in good health.
