Syrian refugees thank Saskatoon for warm welcome

SASKATOON – It was a heartwarming scene Sunday afternoon at Lawson Heights Mall in Saskatoon. Around 100 Syrian refugees surprised Saskatonians with a hearty thank you.

“They just really want to reach out to Canadians,” said volunteer translator Fahad Al-ani. “Thank you so much for welcoming us in a positive way.”

“It’s pretty simple on cardboards and some flowers, but they figured things like that go a long way.”

The refugees handed out roses and thanked everyone for the warm welcome to the city, the donations and everything that’s been done to ease the transition to their new home in Canada.

“They wanted it to come from them, they didn’t want any organizations, it has nothing to do with politics or religion,” said Al-ani.

“It’s truly just from people to people – thank you for everything that you have done.”
