VANCOUVER — Freshpoint Vancouver is recalling Del Monte and Sysco Imperial Fresh brand cantaloupes across Canada due to possible salmonella contamination.
The recall was triggered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency test results. Consumers are warned not to eat the melon and retailers, hotels and restaurants should not sell, serve or use the recalled products sold up to and including Feb. 18 in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba and possibly nationally.
If anyone has the recalled products, they should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
CFIA warns that food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.
Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
So far there have been no reported illnesses associated with this recall.
The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.
