The widow of a Moncton RCMP officer who was gunned down in a 2014 shooting spree left her mark Thursday on a memorial for the fallen Mountie.

Nadine Larche, who was married to Const. Doug Larche, left her fingerprint in a wax leaf to honour her late husband. Along with students at schools in north Moncton, her print will be on one of 12 leaves to be used in the memorial to the three officers who were killed.

“The community really supported us during the last year and a half, and I am really thankful they were able to be part of this permanent memorial,” she said.

“I was really happy to see the kids come down and participate in this project, and the smiles on their faces and them being able to put their permanent mark on the monument.”

Seeing Larche make her mark was a touching moment for the monument’s sculptor, Morgan MacDonald. A few weeks ago, Larche and her three daughters visited him in St. John’s, N.L. to see how the project was taking shape.

“It was a wonderfully moving experience. It was very special, a wonderfully moving experience,” MacDonald said. “We did a lot of work on the sculpture to try and nail the likeness of Doug and try to capture his essence and put his spirit into the piece.”

Larche said she and her daughters took the opportunity to personalize the base of the monument for Doug Larche’s statue.

“It was really touching to be able to go see the monument and to be able to put our personal touches on the base of the statue, to kind of of represent who Doug was and what his family meant to him,” she said.

MacDonald said input from the family was able to reveal “the magic” in the direction of the project.

He added that the monument has changed since its original concept was revealed last year, in order to capture the varying roles of the officers.

“Only one is going to be in the red serge,” he said. “One is going to be in the everyday working uniform, and the other person is going to be in the dog-handling uniform.”

The full monument will be revealed June 4, the second anniversary of the shootings.
