EDMONTON – Enoch Cree Nation and the City of Edmonton announced the renaming of a roadway on Friday. 23 Avenue between 215 Street and Anthony Henday Drive will now be called Maskêkosihk Trail.
“In recognition of renewed relationships based on respect and cooperation, the renaming of this roadway celebrates Indigenous culture within and beyond Edmonton’s city limits,” Mayor Don Iveson said.
“I am honoured to be part of this significant announcement as a shared effort towards reconciliation.”
The new title shows the city’s dedication to reconciliation, Enoch Cree Nation Chief Billy Morin and Iveson said.
“The strength of our First Peoples lies in our culture and language. I thank the City of Edmonton for helping us renew that strength to be better partners in the future of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region,” Morin said.
“In this time of reconciliation – Enoch Cree Nation is committed to mamawihkamatowin (working together).”
The 184 Street to 23 Avenue roadway is located in Enoch Cree Nation and will serve as a visible entryway into the land.
